European Oak Figure of a Lady in Waiting, ca. 16th Century. She stands in front of a castle with a ball and chain at her feet. She holds a bible while probably being persecuted for her religious beliefs. Most likely done for a home alter commissioned by a relative. Her left hand is missing, and there are a few insignificant chips. Purchased from the Ryerson estate. The Ryersons were one of Chicagos most important couples at the beginning of the 20th century. The library at the Art Institute of Chicago is named for them. Ex. Harlan J. Berk, Ltd. 143 Buy or Bid Sale, 2005, lot 477. H. 17..
