Chinese Ming Bronze Censer, Ming Dynasty Late 16th Century. This is a classic late Ming to early Qing type bronze censor. Modeled on an ancient vessel type, this body design originated in the Shang or Zhou periods. Similarly inspired archaizing ornament adorns its sides. The piece has four tubular legs and a rectangular body with an openwork lid topped by a classically Chinese Ming foo dog (lion of Buddha). The piece has typical Ming repair work in lead on one side to cover up casting flaws. This suggests the piece was originally lacquered. A rare period piece. H. 13 W. 8 D. 6 1/2..
