obv. Laureate head right COMM ANT AVG P BRIT
rev. Jupiter, half draped, seated left, holding Victory thunderbolt in extended
right hand and vertical sceptre in left hand P M TR P X IMP VII COS IIII P P
This cointype is normally known with Jupiter holding a thunderbolt in his right hand. The Jupiter on this coin clearly has a Victory in his right hand, which is in principal not unusual for Jupiter. But for the Commodus denarii this variety was until now unknown and unpublished in the standard reference literature. Coin of the highest rarity.
